Kerr clarifies blunt ‘no comment' answer on trust with Draymond

Last week, NBC Sports Bay Area Warriors insider Monte Poole asked Steve Kerr if his trust in Draymond Green was compromised at all after the altercation with Jordan Poole.

After a long pause, Kerr sharply responded with two words: “No comment.”

Three days later, the Warriors coach clarified his words after Golden State’s blowout win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

“I think the reason I was pointed and said ‘no comment’ is because I didn’t want to talk about anything that was private with our team because everything was so raw,” Kerr said. “That wasn’t a ‘no comment’ meaning a sly at Draymond. And I realized as soon as I said it, I said ‘Ah, that was the wrong thing to say,’ because ‘no comment’ sometimes has sort of a hidden meaning behind it or a not-so-hidden meaning.

“My ‘no comment’ was ‘I’m not talking about this.’ I was so angry about the leak, I was so angry that everything made it out. Because as I said, that creates the firestorm. If you’re able to handle things internally, it’s just much easier. So I was angry about the leak and that was the gist of the ‘no comment.’”

After Kerr was able to clear up his remarks, he responded to the original question on his level of trust with Green.

"Draymond and I have been together for eight years," Kerr began. "We’ve had plenty of run-ins, we’ve won championships together, we’ve lost championships together. We’ve been through an awful lot together."

The two words "no comment" struck hard last week, but Kerr's next three words struck even harder.

"I trust him," Kerr continued. "He broke our trust with this incident, but I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt because I think he’s earned that and I think our team feels the same way. So he knows he needs to regain that."

Kerr also announced that Green had been fined, not suspended, and will return to practice Thursday and play in the preseason finale against the Denver Nuggets on Friday.

It definitely won't happen overnight, but the Warriors are handling the situation on their own terms based on what works best for everyone involved. And we'll continue to see how things play out this season as the Warriors look to defend their latest title.
