Jeff Van Gundy tells you why DeMarcus Cousins will be ‘incredibly important'

There is no timetable (that the public knows about at least) for DeMarcus Cousins' return to game action.

Until he's back in uniform, the Warriors will go by committee at center -- with Damian Jones, Jordan Bell and Kevon Looney getting the lionshare of those minutes.

Some people in the basketball world believe the Warriors don't really need Cousins to win the NBA title again and that his impact could end up being minimal.

Jeff Van Gundy does not subscribe to that school of thought.

"I don't think their roster is as deep," the former NBA coach explained on The Lowe Post Podcast. "Do you know Damian Jones can play those Pachulia minutes in a Finals and play 'em well? I feel good about Looney and Bell to an extent -- they're OK.

"But this is not the depth of talent where they have old veteran, grizzled experience. I think Cousins is going to be incredibly important -- that means from a positive standpoint if they win it."

First of all, Zaza Pachulia did not play in the 2018 Finals -- as those minutes went to JaVale McGee -- but Van Gundy's point still stands.

Jones is unproven, while Cousins arguably is the most talented big man in the game. But like pretty much everybody, Van Gundy understands the potential risks that Cousins brings to the table.

"I would be a little concerned about turnover rate with him because they have some risk-taking players ... and that injury is not easy to come back from in Year 1," he added. "So I'm interested in all of it.

"What you can't yet see is the impact it may or may not have from either a positive standpoint or a negative standpoint on the other players. It's impossible to say right now. But I think it's very, very intriguing."

Ain't that the truth.
