Gary Payton gives scouting report on son, current Warrior

The Warriors elected to fill one of the team's two vacant roster spots in early April by signing Gary Payton II, who was fresh off an impressive run in the NBA G League with Raptors 905 in which he took home the circuit's Defensive Player of the Year award.

Payton II comes from pretty good basketball genes, to say the least, as his father Gary Payton is a Basketball Hall of Famer and Oakland native. The elder Payton joined Dorell Wright on the latest episode of "Dubs Talk," and gave a scouting report on his son and the Warriors' newest addition to the roster.

“He plays so old-school right now, a lot of teams don’t really value his worth," Payton said. "He likes to play D, he likes to get everybody involved, he wanna be that 10, 10, 10 guy. I’m just happy that he stayed working out and stayed getting it. Now that Golden State is giving him an opportunity, I think Steve Kerr knows what he can get from him.

"Just put him in the game, get a good 12 or 13 minutes from him, hound the best player on the team, the guard and then he can bring his other fellas in the game and close the game out."

Payton II signed his first 10-day contract with the Warriors on April 8, before getting a second one on April 18. In eight games with the Warriors this season, Payton II has averaged 1.8 points and 0.9 rebounds, but has shown the defensive intensity that seems to run in the family.

In his best game since coming to the Warriors, Payton scored 10 points and racked up four steals in a blowout win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Payton II would have to be signed for the remainder of the season if the Warriors want to keep him around after his second 10-day contract.

As the Warriors try to maintain their position in the Western Conference playoff picture, Payton's willingness to hustle and determination on both ends could make him a solid reserve down the stretch.
