Brown responds to Kerr's jab about coach's sideline attire

Warriors associate coach Mike Brown won’t get to flex his wardrobe prowess while working on the sidelines this season.

Last week the NBA announced more lax rules on coaches’ clothing now that no fans are in attendance at arenas. Steve Kerr took the chance to give a friendly jab to Brown, who was known for being sharply dressed every night the team took the floor.

But in the preseason opener vs. the Denver Nuggets, the entire Warriors coaching staff wore coordinating polos and casual pants.

“I’m a little worried because I got all these nice suits and sport coats in my closet right now taking up space,” Brown recently told The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami on “The TK Show.”

“But I’m going to keep some suits around in case I have to dust them off at the halfway point if fans start coming back into the arena.”

Brown said he’s got about 25 to 30 suits at the ready, but that a trip to the storage unit might be in order soon. At least his pre-game routine should be a whole lot easier in 2020-21. In a typical season, Brown is usually mapping out which suits for which games, often weeks in advance.

“If we go to the Clippers this week and we go to the Clippers two months later, I got to make sure I’m not in the same get-up I was two months ago,” Brown said. “That takes some planning, that takes some timing. That’s valuable time that I’m getting back. So I do applaud the NBA for helping me with my time management.”

As much as it pains Brown to have to share a fashion sense with the casual Kerr, this isn’t the first time he’s toned down his attire. While coaching the Nigerian national team in Rwanda in late November, Brown stuck to a casual look.

When you hear from the (usually) easy-going Brown and Kerr, it’s easy to see why the Warriors have been able to keep the core coaching staff together throughout all of these years.
