It was 23 years ago today when Game 3 of the 1989 Bay Bridge World Series, and many Bay Area lives -- were disrupted in the aftermath of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

The 5:04 p.m. tremor, which registered 6.9 on the Richter scale on October 17 1989, caused the partial collapse of the Bay Bridge ...

... and the complete collapse of the Cypress freeway structure in the East Bay, claiming 42 lives. Overall in northern California, 63 people lost their lives, and thousands were rendered homeless.
