Sayonara! Ex-Giant Penny will play in Japan

Former Giants pitcher Brad Penny, who had a brief stint in the Bay Area in 2009, is going to continue his baseball career in Japan.

Penny, 33, has signed with the SoftBank Hawks, based in Fukuoka. The team announced the signing on its web site on Sunday, noting that the veteran right-hander is expected to arrive in Japan on Wednesday.

Penny, who went 11-11 with a 5.30 ERA with the Tigers last season, owns a career record of 119-99 with a 4.23 ERA over 12 major league seasons. He went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts for the Giants in '09.
