Yaz wants Belt-Klay ‘captain-off' to decide the Bay's leader

Brandon Belt is the self-proclaimed captain of the Giants and Klay Thompson is the captain of the Bay Area waters, which sets up the important question: Who is the real captain of the Bay?

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Laura Britt put that question to Belt’s teammate, Mike Yastrzemski, who said Belt is going to have to earn that title.

“I think they have to have a captain-off,” Yastrzemski said during spring training. “We’ll have to settle it. We’ll have to find some full-on captain competition to put those two up against each other.”

Yastrzemski didn’t elaborate on the type of competition, but did offer to serve as an emcee for the event.

Thompson earned the nickname “Captain Klay” for his escapades on his boat, where he would stream himself on Instagram Live and answer questions from fans as he rehabbed from injury. The exploits only deepened Thompson’s beloved status in the Bay and earned him well-deserved congratulations from Warriors fans and beyond when he came back earlier this season.

Belt, meanwhile, named himself the captain of the Giants last season and just ran with it, labeling his jersey with the “C” and playfully doubling down on commanding respect from his teammates during interviews.

Belt and Thompson – two worthy captains, but only one can be the true captain of the Bay. As Yaz said, perhaps only a captain-off can solve this debate.
