What we learned as Giants open trip with loss to Marlins

Share

Once again, a Giants starter gave Gabe Kapler a great start. Once again, the lineup wasn't up for the challenge, and this time it cost San Francisco.

The Giants lost 4-1 to the Marlins on the first night of a six-game road trip to the East Coast. This one was low-scoring on both ends until the eighth, when Matt Wisler issued a walk and Wandy Peralta entered and gave up a single and then a three-run moonshot to Starling Marte, ruining his hot start to the season.

That was more than enough for the Marlins (6-7) with the way the Giants (8-5) are swinging the bats. The lineup, which entered the road trip with a .207 batting average, had just three hits off soft-tossing lefty Daniel Castano, who was making his first appearance of the year, and never really threatened late.

Here are three things to know ...

Familiar Swing

Mike Yastrzemski entered the night batting .154, but his swing was starting to come around on the homestand, and he looked like his old self against the Marlins. Yastrzemski doubled in his second at-bat and scored the game's first run. He pulled a triple down the line the next time up, but the Giants' struggling offense stranded him at third.

The two-hit game was just the second of the season for Yastrzemski, who had 17 multi-hit games in 54 appearances last summer.

Through three starts with the Giants, Anthony DeSclafani certainly looks like he'll fit the Gausman-Smyly mold. The right-hander, signed to a one-year contract in the offseason, has allowed just two earned runs in those three starts and is averaging about a strikeout per inning.

DeSclafani was sharp again on Friday, allowing four hits and striking out four in six innings. He might have gone deeper in the game had his spot not come up in the top of the seventh. The only blemish was a solo homer that exciting young infielder Jazz Chisholm bounced off the top of the right field wall when DeSclafani hung a slider.

Going Streaking ... For a Long Time

Brandon Belt pinch-hit for Wilmer Flores with two outs and a runner on third in the sixth. He drew a walk, extending his on-base streak against the Marlins to 27 games. It's a streak that goes all the way back to July 19, 2014, with Belt having a .393 average against the Marlins since that day, with a homer, 13 doubles and 15 RBI. He has walked 16 times in those 27 games.

Among active players, Belt has the second-highest career batting average (.343) against the Marlins. Only Justin Turner (.350) has been better.
