What excites Posey most about latest All-Star selection

The NL All-Star roster includes 23-year-old Ronald Acuña Jr. and 22-year-old Fernando Tatis Jr., along with new names like Adam Frazier of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Jesse Winker of the Cincinnati Reds. But some things don't change over time, and the catcher will be a very familiar face for baseball fans across the country.

Buster Posey was voted in as a starter for the fifth time and will be making his seventh All-Star appearance since 2012. After Thursday's game, Posey called it "a nice recognition" and said there are a couple of specific reasons why this year's game will be special.

"Thinking back earlier in my career, if I would have been told that I would be starting an All-Star Game at age 34 I would be pretty happy about that," Posey said. "I'm excited for my kids. They're almost 10 so this will be one that they'll really be able to enjoy and hopefully remember. Yeah, looking forward to it."

The Poseys have twins -- Lee and Addison -- who turn 10 this August, and last year they also adopted identical twin girls named Ada and Livvi who will turn one on Saturday.

Posey has missed the All-Star team just twice since playing his first full season in 2012. He wasn't chosen in 2014 (although he ended up with some of his best offensive numbers that season) or 2019 (a down year at the plate). He opted out of the 2020 season but there was no All-Star Game, which might have cost teammates like Mike Yastrzemski and Donovan Solano.

Posey has returned as a 34-year-old with a slightly altered swing and a lot of his old power. He leads NL catchers with 3.0 Wins Above Replacement, a .420 on-base percentage and a .559 slugging percentage. Only Willson Contreras of the Cubs (13) has more homers than Posey (12) among NL catchers.

Three Giants breakout candidates to watch entering 2025 season

The Giants had three players make the final ballot in fan voting, and they're hopeful that Sunday's announcement of the full team brings good news for a few who have helped them get off to the best start in baseball. Brandon Crawford didn't win the fan vote but is a lock to be selected as a backup, and Kevin Gausman will be on the pitching staff. Tyler Rogers and Anthony DeSclafani also will have a chance to make the team.
