SAN FRANCISCO -- Logan Webb was honest about it in spring training. He didn't mind the fact that the designated hitter likely is coming to the National League in 2022, and he wouldn't have minded it coming a year earlier.
"A little part of me wanted the DH forever because my last at-bat in 2019 was a base hit," Webb said back then. "I was hoping to finish my hitting career with a base hit."
He nearly finished it with something much, much better.

Webb hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning Sunday against the San Diego Padres at Oracle Park, giving the Giants a 9-1 lead in a game they needed to win to clinch the NL West. It was Webb's first career home run in what -- at the time -- possibly was his last-ever regular-season at-bat.
The DH likely is coming next season, and Webb has made no secret of the fact that he really wanted to clear the wall at least once in his career. He became the first Giants pitcher to homer this season, but it was all part of the package on Sunday. Webb was working on a gem on the mound and he singled and walked in his first two plate appearances. The homer gave him three runs, tying a San Francisco Giants record for a pitcher.

Webb nearly homered in August but had to settle for a 399-foot single off the wall. He repeated that night that he hoped to at some point get his first homer since he was a two-sport star at Rocklin High.
"Everyone keeps telling me I'm going to get one at some point," he said that night. "I'm working on it."
Ultimately, though, Webb didn't end on a hit. The Giants added another two runs in the seventh, and he came up for his fourth at-bat in the eighth. He struck out, but only after getting a standing ovation from the crowd.
