Report: Giants give young shortstop $2.2 million contract

There's not much the Giants can do at the moment to improve their 2022 club, but they made some moves on Saturday that could have a huge impact later this decade.

On the first day of the international signing period, the Giants gave $2.2 million to Ryan Reckley, a shortstop from the Bahamas, MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reported Saturday morning. They also signed Venezuelan catcher Juan Perez for $1.2 million and shortstop Dennys Riera, per Sanchez, headlining what the organization expects will be a strong international class.

Reckley was ranked as the No. 9 prospect in this class by both MLB.com and Baseball America. The 17-year-old is said to have good speed and is a switch-hitter who projects as a top-of-the-order hitter. Baseball America ranked him as the best player available from the Bahamas, the home country of Giants first base coach Antoan Richardson.

Perez, also 17, was ranked 30th in the class by MLB.com and 42nd by Baseball America. He is a physically mature right-handed hitter who is viewed as one of the better defensive catchers in the class. According to MLB.com, he "shows good bat speed and drives the ball across the outfield, primarily to right-center."

The Giants now have one of the game's best farm systems in large part because of their success with international additions in recent years. Marco Luciano, their top prospect, signed for $2.6 million in 2018. They also signed outfielder Luis Matos that year, and he now ranks as their third best prospect per most evaluators.
