Fewer than two weeks after the Giants lost assistant pitching coach Ethan Katz to the Chicago White Sox, San Francisco reportedly is close to filling the vacancy.
The Giants are closing in on hiring J.P. Martinez to be the new assistant pitching coach on Gabe Kapler's major league staff, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported Tuesday night, citing sources.

SIGN UP HERE Martinez comes to the Giants from the Minnesota Twins, where he served as a minor league pitching coordinator for the last three seasons.
The 38-year-old Martinez was drafted by the Twins in 2004 and spent five seasons playing in their minor league system. After coaching at the high school level for several years, Martinez returned to professional baseball when he became the pitching coach for the Twins' rookie-level team in 2014, according to the St. Cloud Times.

If the Martinez hiring is finalized, Kapler will add another young coach with limited experience at high levels of professional baseball.
