Ramos ‘a treat to watch' at Giants' alternate site vs. A's

The Giants' alternate site has a different look this year, and the hottest bat from the spring is turning heads in Sacramento.

River Cats broadcaster Johnny Doskow is getting a front-row seat to Heliot Ramos' show at Sutter Health Park and continues to be impressed by the 21-year-old. He hopes River Cats fans get to watch a whole lot of Ramos this season, too.

"I hope River Cats fans get a chance to see him all season," Doskow said Sunday night to KNBR's Bill Laskey. "I hope he's down here for two or three months. ... I just hope he gets a lot of reps down here and when he goes up he's ready to dominate.

"He has been a treat to watch so far."

Ramos looked like a future superstar in his first big league camp this spring. He hit .410 with three home runs and a 1.143 OPS in 21 Cactus League games. The former first-round draft pick was then given the Barney Nugent Award, which is handed out to the Giants player who performed the best in their first big league camp.

Instead of just practicing and playing against each other at the alternate site like last year, Giants prospects actually are able to scrimmage against those at the A's alternate site in Stockton multiple times per week. Ramos' hot bat followed him from the desert right away.

Ramos' defense is his biggest question mark right now. He has the speed and arm strength to be a plus defender, but he makes questionable reads at times and evaluators aren't sure if he's going to stick in center fielder. He's playing a lot of right field.

But on Saturday, his defense is what shined brightest with a great diving catch in right field.

"We saw him make a beautiful diving catch yesterday," Doskow said. "Everyone knows about the bat, but he plays with such joy."

Could fully healthy Lee hit in the heart of Giants' lineup?

The young and exciting outfielder likely would have started the season in Double-A Richmond or possibly Triple-A Sacramento before the start of the minor league season was pushed back to May 4. That could change now after his strong spring and continuing to impress at the alternate site.

Giants fans will need a weekly reminder Ramos only is 21 years old, but he should make his way to San Francisco much sooner than anticpated with the way he has progressed over the last year.
