Posey involved in Correa pursuit, frustrated by situation

Buster Posey, just like the rest of baseball, was dumbfounded by the odd Carlos Correa saga this offseason.

Correa initially agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with San Francisco on Dec. 13 before concerns regarding his physical derailed the deal. The same thing happened after he agreed to a 12-year, $315 million contract with the New York Mets. Those two failed agreements led to him eventually re-signing with the Minnesota Twins almost a month later for $200 million over six years.

Former Giants catcher Buster Posey, who joined the ownership group last season, spoke with The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly about San Francisco's offseason and his view of the Correa saga.

"I was in on all the phone calls. I spoke with Correa. I was fired up for him to join the organization. And I’m bummed," Posey told Baggarly. "I’m still disappointed that it didn’t work out. I’d say my big takeaway is that I gained a lot of respect for him and the way he handled it. It was a tough situation all the way around."

Posey found the situation quite confusing and was frustrated that the Giants were unable to discuss what happened while Correa's agent, Scott Boras, was able to speak much more freely.

"And I’m still confused on who’s allowed to say what, because it seems like Scott Boras says whatever he wants," Posey added. "Everyone else is told not to say anything. So that part gets confusing to me. Being behind the scenes now, and having more information, some of the stuff that gets put out there, it’s, ‘What in the world is going on?’ So that was frustrating for me. It was a glimpse from behind the curtain that I haven’t had before."

For Posey and the Giants, the Correa situation is in the rearview mirror.

San Francisco now will look to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season with a revamped roster that includes a handful of free agents the team actually did sign, like Mitch Haniger, Michael Conforto, Ross Stripling, Sean Manaea and Taylor Rogers.
