Posey hit by pitch in elbow, leaves Giants-Marlins game

The Giants paid the price to take their first lead over the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Catcher Buster Posey reached base when he was hit by a pitch on his left elbow, scoring when Austin Slater crushed a three-run home run to center field in the next at-bat to give the Giants a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Posey then left the game before the bottom of the inning, and Curt Casali replaced him behind the dish. Giants manager Gabe Kapler said after the game that Posey sustained a left elbow contusion, but that X-rays were negative.

The Giants' lead wouldn't stand, either, as San Francisco lost 7-6 to Miami in 10 innings.

Posey was 1-for-2 at the plate, continuing his solid start to the season.

After missing the entirety of the shortened 2020 season following the adoption of twins, Posey has slashed .265/.342/.441 in 34 at-bats this season. Posey hasn't homered since the first two games of the season, but he has now reached base safely in five of his last six games.

Since Posey hasn't caught in three consecutive games all season, Casali likely would've started Sunday against the Marlins had Posey not been hurt.

If Posey misses time, top prospect Joey Bart is waiting in the wings at the Giants' alternate site.
