Junis includes former Giants star in dream starting rotation

Every MLB players has their favorite players who would be part of any dream lineup, or in Jakob Junis' case, dream rotation.

The Giants pitcher was asked to pick his all-time starting rotation by NBC Sports Bay Area's Therese Viñal, and the 29-year-old Junis has a combination of players from the the last four decades.

As a result, Junis didn't show any bias towards any era; however, the right-handed pitcher did appeal to Giants fans with his final selection.

"Randy Johnson," Junis told Viñal on "Summer Sunday" this weekend. "Get our lefty in there. I would say Pedro Martinez. Another really good one.

"Have to go with someone today, so I would say [Jacob] deGrom. He's pretty unmatched. He's unbelievable. Someone I really liked growing up was Greg Maddux. A little change of pace from the flamethrowers in the rotation. And then I will throw in, for my fifth one, former Giant Tim Lincecum."

When looking at the five pitchers, aside from Maddux, who relied more on command and location to get batters out, there's a common theme with the other four starters: They could throw heat with their fastball while in the prime of their careers.

Junis' having Lincecum as part of his dream rotation makes sense because of what he was able to do over a four-year span from 2008 through 2011. At the peak of his powers during that stretch, Lincecum had a 2.81 ERA and struck out 977 batters in 881 2/3 innings. He was an All-Star in all four season, won the National League Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009 and led the Giants to the 2010 World Series title.

Baseball in 2022 puts a spotlight on the fastball, so it is no surprise that Junis chose Lincecum, Johnson, Martinez and deGrom to head his rotation along with Maddux.
