The Giants made a last-minute splash right before the MLB trade deadline on July 30, acquiring former NL MVP Kris Bryant from the Chicago Cubs.
Bryant filled one of three (speculated) needs the Giants were looking to address: a right-handed bat, a starting pitcher and a late-inning reliever.
They addressed two of those needs while opting not to add another starting pitcher before the deadline.

Making the decision not to bolster their rotation, the Giants have -- in a way -- made a commitment to Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Johnny Cueto and Logan Webb.
Webb (W, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks) was very good against a potent Houston Astros lineup Sunday afternoon, acting as an example as to why the Giants did not trade for a starter.
“I think yesterday showed you why we didn’t go out and grab a starter,” Giants general manager Scott Harris said on KNBR's "Murph & Mac". “If we were to add a starter, most people would have expected that (Logan Webb) might have been the odd man out. He’s throwing the ball as well as anyone in our rotation right now. We think he’s one of our best starters, I think the fans saw it yesterday."

A common debate that pops up every year around the deadline is whether if buying or selling can convey a negative message to the rest of the clubhouse.
If a team is looking to add talent, does it mean they don't believe in the players already in-house? If a team ends up selling, does it mean they've waived the white flag?
"We wanted to show our confidence in him and the rest of the rotation that this is a group that has performed well all year and we believe in this group," Harris added. "I think that’s one of the reasons why we didn’t go out and get a starter.”
With the moves they made this week, the Giants have succeeded at both adding talent and continuing to instill confidence in the group that has helped them claim baseball's best record thus far.
