Giants' stunning ninth-inning comeback extremely rare

The last time the Giants won a game when trailing by four or more runs entering the ninth inning, Will Clark, Matt Williams and Barry Bonds made up the heart of the lineup.

With a stunning 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Thursday, the Giants erased 28 years of franchise history.

On April 18, 1993, the Giants trailed the Atlanta Braves 12-8 in the ninth inning before scoring four runs to force extra innings, where they won 13-12 on a walk-off solo homer by Williams. The winner of that thriller was reliever Michael Jackson.

More than 28 years later, the four-run game-tying rally in Phoenix was fueled by Kris Bryant, Alex Dickerson, Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and LaMonte Wade Jr.

D-backs starter Merrill Kelly completely shut down the Giants for eight innings, allowing just three hits, walking two and striking out four. But with 102 pitches, he wasn't allowed to go back out for the bottom of the ninth, and that's when the Giants pounced.

After Bryant doubled and Dickerson singled, Crawford doubled to get the Giants on the board. Following a Donovan Solano hit by pitch, Belt brought home Dickerson with a single to right. Two batters later, Wade Jr. came through with the clutch two-run game-tying single to right.

In the 10th inning, Bryant gave the Giants the lead with a double to left to score automatic runner Tommy La Stella.

Jake McGee shut the door on the D-backs in the bottom of the 10th, stranding the tying run at third base for his 24th save of the season.

The Giants snapped a streak of 800 straight losses when trailing by four or more runs entering the ninth inning.

Even more impressive is that the last time the Giants franchise won a game that where it trailed 4-0 or worse entering the ninth inning was June 8, 1941 against the St. Louis Cardinals, per Sportsradar. Yes, when the organization resided in New York.

Thursday's win pushes the Giants' record to 69-40 and gives them a four-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers and seven and a half over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.

It's fitting that this Giants team, which has a never-say-die attitude, was the one to end 28 years of futility.
