Giants' Manaea explains goofy habit of naming baseball gloves

When the Giants signed left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea in December, they apparently also signed his family of baseball gloves.

Per the Giants 2023 media guide, Manaea assigns a corresponding name to each of the gloves he uses on the mound. Among the names he's used in the past for his leather include SheHulk, Crestineth, Midnight and Abraham Lincoln.

"A-bro-ham Lincoln," Manaea clarified Wednesday in an interview with KNBR's Greg Papa and John Lund. "It was a red, white and blue glove. I never use that one in games. I think Rawlings put something out, and I got it and loved it. That was a catch glove there for a while."

Manaea, per the media guide, even named his car, Sasha, and his bike, Salsa Azul. He has yet to announce the name for his glove in his first season in San Francisco.

"It’s just a way to get attached to my gloves," Manaea said to Papa and Lund. "We ride and die together. We become one."

Manaea is a part of the Giants' starting rotation that runs six pitchers deep. He will begin the season in the starting mix along with Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Anthony DeSclafani, Ross Stripling and Alex Wood.

After spending the first six seasons of his MLB career across the Bay Bridge with the Oakland Athletics and another in San Diego, Manaea is preparing for his first campaign wearing the Orange and Black at Oracle Park.

"I look in the mirror, like wow, these colors look really good on me," Manaea said.
