Giants lose Belt to Injured List with mild oblique strain

Share

The second Brandon Belt dropped his bat and cringed Tuesday night in Arizona, it became clear he would likely go on the Injured List. The Giants made it official Wednesday.

Belt had an MRI that showed a mild left oblique strain that will keep him out 10-to-14 days and was placed on the IL. Infielder Jason Vosler was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take the roster spot.

Belt has been dealing with the side soreness for several weeks and missed six games on the last road trip. The Giants hoped they could keep Belt from a more extended absence, but he was just 2-for-11 with six strikeouts in his first three games back in the lineup.

Belt twice grimaced on swings Tuesday, and the second time he dropped his bat. Trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Gabe Kapler came out and immediately took him out of the game.

Kapler said Darin Ruf will get most of the time at first base while Belt is out. Vosler is also an option, and Wilmer Flores is expected back from the IL on Saturday.
