Dodgers' Roberts waiting to hear back from Bochy on NLDS bet

SAN FRANCISCO -- It has been five years since the Giants last played playoff baseball and over two years since Bruce Bochy last served as San Francisco's manager. That didn't stop Dave Roberts from being asked about Bochy hours before Roberts' Los Angeles Dodgers face Bochy's former team Friday night in Game 1 of the NLDS

Roberts played under Bochy for four seasons -- two in San Diego and two in San Francisco -- and the two remain friends, even after years managing against each other as rivals. The Dodgers manager lost a bet with Bochy after winning 106 games this season, but falling one game short of the 107-win Giants. Roberts now has to buy Bochy dinner and a nice bottle of bordeaux, which Roberts admitted likely won't be cheap knowing Bochy's taste for wine.

But, just like everything else between the Giants and Dodgers this year, there's a twist to the bet. Roberts said after the Dodgers' NL Wild Card Game win over the St. Louis Cardinals that he wanted to go double or nothing with Bochy in the NLDS.

"I'm going to shoot him a text tonight," Roberts said Wednesday night. "Yeah, we're going to go double or nothing on the series."

Well, it sounds like San Francisco's former skipper has yet to text back his friend and former longtime foe.

"He did not, so we're waiting," Roberts said Friday. "I'm in wait-mode right now. So I'll follow up with him. So right now he's won this thread. We haven't revisited that, so I'll get back with him."

As far as Bochy's future goes, Roberts doesn't see him going back to managing in 2022.

"Any team would be very fortunate to have him leading their club on the field. I think if it's the right situation for Boch, he'll consider it. Do I think he will? No.

"Just a hunch ... this is just my guess, and no one knows better than Boch, but that's just an honest answer."

Bochy won over 2,000 regular-season games between the Padres and Giants, and led San Francisco to three World Series titles in five years. These days, he serves as a special advisor to the Giants, and a bordeaux connoisseur on the side.
