DeSclafani's ‘tremendous' outing not enough in loss to Tigers

Anthony DeSclafani continued his impressive start to the 2023 MLB season despite the Giants' 7-6 extra innings loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday at Comerica Park.

The veteran struck out five Tigers batters and gave up two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work.

"It was good," DeSclafani told reporters after the loss. "Felt pretty good for the most part. Felt kind of just a little out of my delivery just earlier in the game, too. Felt like I was yanking some stuff, but just trying to mix speeds and was trying to get deep into the game."

DeSclafani has been one of the standouts for the Giants as the 32-year-old has started three games, compiling a 1-0 record, 1.42 ERA and 16 strikeouts. After an ankle injury cut his 2022 MLB season short, the Giants' right-hander is glad to be back on the mound.

"I knew what kind of pitcher I am, and I think more than anything, I'm just glad I'm able to be healthy and just continue to progress off of how I pitch in '21," DeSclafani continued.

The Giants' right-hander gave San Francisco a chance to come away with the victory, which is all manager Gabe Kapler could ask for, considering DeSclafani went deep into the game.

"Fantastic start and really dug deep to get the last couple of outs," Kapler told reporters after the game. "And even sending him out there for the seventh [inning] was a challenge. It was a lot of work for him on a hot day.

"And I thought he pitched a tremendous ball game."

San Francisco's offense provided six runs in the first three innings for DeSclafani, which he held onto. However, despite Detroit rallying from a five-run deficit to win in extra innings, DeSclafani isn't blaming anyone for the loss.

"We're all trying to win ball games and pitch our best," DeSclafani told reporters. "Just didn't go our way today. And I have full belief in our bullpen, our pitching staff. I think we're all nasty just the way the ball went today, and I'll get back out there tomorrow."
