Controversial umpire Hernandez part of Giants NLDS crew

The Giants' 2021 season has been one wild mix of triumph and torture. There still could be plenty more of the former in the playoffs for San Francisco, but we know there will be a whole lot of the latter -- especially with one certain umpire being part of the NLDS when the Giants face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the St. Louis Cardinals.

That's right, Angel Hernandez will be part of the umpiring crew at Oracle Park starting Friday night. And according to the umpire rotation assignments released by MLB, he is scheduled to be behind the plate for Game 2 of the series on Saturday.

Hernandez has been a MLB umpire since 1991, and has been part of a long list of big games. He umpired in the 2002 and 2005 World Series, has been part of seven League Championships and 11 League Division Series. But he certainly doesn't come without controversy and frustrations.

The veteran umpire was downright terrible earlier this season in a 3-2 Giants loss to the Dodgers on June 28. Even Buster Posey, who is about as mild-mannered as it gets, was baffled by a strike-three call in the loss.

Hernandez's calls were in favor of the Dodgers by plus-0.63 runs in the Giants' loss. He was against the Giants by minus-0.53 runs.

This season, Hernandez served as the home plate umpire twice in Giants games. The second time came in a 5-1 Giants win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sept. 2, but he again was in favor of the opposition. His calls went against the Giants by minus-0.45 runs.
