Bay Area unite: Klay, Belt agree to be co-captains

Giants first baseman Brandon Belt and Warriors guard Klay Thompson share a couple of things in common: They both play professional sports in San Francisco, and they both love the water.

The two have also both been dubbed “captains” -- Belt, in tongue-in-cheek fashion for his veteran leadership on the Giants, and Klay for his legendary boat rides to work. But who is the real captain of the Bay?

It's the question Belt's teammate Mike Yastrzemski first posed to NBC Sports Bay Area's Laura Britt during spring training.

“I think they have to have a captain-off,” Yastrzemski said. “We’ll have to settle it. We’ll have to find some full-on captain competition to put those two up against each other.”

Luckily, Bay Area sports fans don’t have to pick a side because, as of Wednesday night, both star athletes have agreed to be co-captains of the Bay.

After the Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets on Monday, Klay was asked about how he feels about the title being circulated at Oracle Park.

“I give Brandon a lot of respect, he’s a World Series champion,” Thompson said. “And we can co-captain together.”

Two days later, birthday boy Belt gave his take on whether he’d be willing to share his title.

“First off, I absolutely have a boat, I’m more on the freshwater side than the saltwater,” Belt said after the Giants’ 5-2 win over the New York Mets on Wednesday. “But I’m 100 percent down for being co-captains. I mean, I can be captain baseball out here and we got a basketball one. It’d be great if we got a football and a hockey one as well. We can even have secret captain meetings if they want to. I’m down for anything.”

When Thompson isn’t playing basketball, he’s cruising through the San Francisco Bay.

And after Belt proclaimed himself as the team’s captain last season, he took it one step further on this year’s Opening Day when he showed up to Oracle Park in a boat with a “C” on his jersey and a captain’s hat on his head.
