Ryan Vogelsong reacts to Giants Wall of Fame: ‘This is my Cooperstown'

Editor's note: The Giants Wall of Fame ceremony will be streaming live at 2 p.m. PT on the NBC Sports Bay Area Facebook page, right here.

Ryan Vogelsong is the epitome of a "Forever Giant." There was no greater example than when Vogelsong retired as a Giant.

On May 8, 2018, Vogelsong appeared on the mound at AT&T Park for one last time after signing a one-day contract to retire as a Giant. Vogelsong tipped his hat to the crowd and tossed three pitches to Nick Hundley before Bruce Bochy walked out to take the ball from him one last time.

After being drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 1998 MLB Draft, Vogelsong's journey took him all over the minor leagues and even three years in Japan. In the end, he spent seven seasons in San Francisco and retired as one of the most beloved Giants.

Now on Saturday, his journey ends with some of the greatest Giants ever. Along with Matt Cain and Brian Wilson, Vogelsong is being inducted into the Giants Wall of Fame.

"This is my Cooperstown," Vogelsong said Friday on KNBR. "I wasn't good enough to make Cooperstown, but this is my Cooperstown and it's something that means a lot to me, especially as a Giant.

"If you look at the wall, some of the other people that are on there, they're the greatest players in the history of baseball. To think that I'm going to be on the same wall as them is something I never thought could happen to me. It's an amazing moment for not only me, but my entire family."

Giants closer Walker details his keys to success from last season

Vogelsong finished his seven seasons with the Giants in 2015 before playing his last year in 2016 with the Pirates. As a Giant, Vogelsong went 48-49 with 3.93 ERA. Over his 12-year career, Vogelsong ended with a 61-75 record and 4.48 ERA.

How Vogelsong will truly be remembered is for his postseason heroics. Vogelsong won two World Series with the Giants, one as a 34-year-old in 2012 and one as a 36-year-old in 2014. In eight postseason appearances, seven starts, Vogelsong never lost a game with a 3-0 record and 2.92 ERA.

Whenever Vogelsong walks down 24 Willie Mays Plaza, he'll always be among Giants.

"The coolest thing for me to think about is some day when I'm a grandfather and hopefully a great grandfather, is that my grandchildren will be able to walk past that and go, 'Man, that was my grand-dad.' That's cool. I think it's gonna be there forever," Vogelsong.

Forever Giant, Ryan Vogelsong.
