The connection between former Giants left fielder Barry Bonds and the Miami Marlins is getting stronger.

On Monday, CBS Sports reported that the Marlins were considering hiring the 51-year-old as their hitting coach.

Tuesday, new details emerged that could signal a partnership starting soon.

Bonds flew to Miami last week, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, and met with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, new manager Don Mattingly and other team executives.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Marlins have made an offer and are awaiting Bonds' decision.

Nightengale also reports that while negotiations aren't finalized, Bonds tentatively plans to accept the offer to be co-hitting coach with former A's infielder Frank Menechino.

Bonds has worked as a guest instructor for the Giants in spring training, but he has never officially held an in-season coaching position.
