Report: McGwire to become Dodgers' hitting coach

Share

Mark McGwire is leaving St. Louis and heading to Los Angeles, informing the Cardinals that he will be taking a similar position with the Dodgers. The similar position is presumably a job as hitting coach, a position he held with the Cardinals for the past three seasons.

According to the St. Louis Dispatch, McGwire has already informed the Cardinals of his decision and does not anticipate signing the contract extension St. Louis has offered him, although nothing with the Dodgers is official yet.

With McGwire as hitting coach, the Cardinals won the 2011 World Series and appeared in the 2012 NLCS vs. the Giants. He has also coached the Cardinals' multitude of young hitters to success, as players like Allen Craig and David Freese have become staples in the everyday lineup.

One reason for the move to Los Angeles may be the location. McGwire's family resides in Orange County.
