Report: High-speed rail could stoke SF-LA rivalry by 2025

A new mode of transportation down the West Coast could add fuel to the Bay Area/Southern California sports rivalry in less than a decade.

The bullet train may pull into San Jose before it heads south to Los Angeles. But sources at City Hall confirmed to NBC Bay Area on Wednesday night that the first leg of the high speed rail will be built between San Jose and Bakersfield by 2025.

If all goes as planned, the bullet train could get travelers from San Francisco to LA in 2.5 hours.

The Bay Area shares rivalries with Los Angeles teams in the NFL (San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams), MLB (San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers), NBA (Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers), and NHL (San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings).

The rail would make it easy for Bay Area fans to travel South for divisional matchups, and also make it easy for SoCal fans to make it up North for those big games on the schedule.
