The shortstop position was one of concern for the A's before Cliff Pennington hit the disabled list. Now, with Brandon Hicks and Eric Sogard holding it down, the A's have entered trade talks with the Florida Marlins for former shortstop Hanley Ramirez, according to a USA Today report.
The A's reportedly join the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays in the negotiations for the 36th highest-paid player in the majors.
While Ramirez would bring the A's a level of star-power they have lacked, the three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger hasn't been the same since he led the league with a .342 average in 2009.
Ramirez's numbers plummeted in 2011 when he hit .243 with 10 home runs, prompting the Marlins to bring in Jose Reyes and move Ramirez to third base.

So far this season, Ramirez is batting .246 with 14 home runs in 92 games.
Ramirez, 28, is in the fourth season of a six-year, 70 million contract that will make him a free agent after 2014. The 2006 Rookie of the Year is due 15 million in 2013 and 16 million in 2014.
