A.J. Griffin was a promising young arm in the A's system just a few years ago.

But Tommy John surgery cost him the last two seasons, and the A's designated the 27-year-old for assignment on Nov. 20 when they signed free agent Rich Hill to a one-year, $6 million deal. Five days later, Griffin was released.

Now, nearly a month later, Griffin has latched on with another AL West team.

The Texas Rangers signed the right-hander to a minor league deal with an invitation to Major League spring training, the club announced Monday.

Drafted in the 13th round of the 2010 MLB Draft, Griffin made his major league debut with the A's on June 24, 2012. In 15 starts that season, Griffin posted a 7-1 record with a 3.06 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 82.1 innings pitched.
