Three A's named finalists for AL Gold Glove awards

The Athletics were well represented Thursday when the finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove award were announced.

First baseman Matt Olson, third baseman Matt Chapman and catcher Sean Murphy all are finalists. While Olson and Chapman already have won the award in the past, Murphy is looking for his first piece of hardware in Oakland.

Olson led AL first baseman in total chances in fielding percentage. He also was second in assists and putouts. However, his -0.2 dWAR was the worst of his career. The 27-year-old won the award in 2018 and 2019.

Olson also is a finalist for the Silver Slugger award.

Chapman continues to be the gold standard of defense for third baseman. Once again, he made it look easy in 2021. He led all third basemen throughout the majors in fielding percentage and was first in the AL in total chances and putouts. Chapman even ranked second in double plays and was fourth in assists.

However, his 1.3 dWAR an 10 defensive runs saved both are career lows for a full season.

Chapman has won two Gold Gloves and two Platinum Gloves in his five-year career.

Murphy started 104 games behind the plate, and had a 1.3 dWAR. His 10 defensive runs saved were tied for third among all MLB catchers. He threw out 13 runners attempting to steal and allowed only one passed ball all year long.

An A's catcher has never won a Gold Glove.
