Pinder lands on IL with hamstring strain; A's call up Orf

The injury news keeps piling up for the A’s.

Chad Pinder, originally one option to take over at third base with Matt Chapman's season over, went on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strained right hamstring.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser was first to report Pinder's injury, which he suffered during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, a 5-2 loss, against the Texas Rangers. He was scratched from the second game.

“It’s probably not good, either, to tell you the truth,” A's manager Bob Melvin said after the team's 10-1 win in the nightcap.

The A's still have options, of course. Vimael Machin can play third, as can Tommy La Stella, who could move there with Tony Kemp doing well at second base this season.

Nate Orf, whom the A's recalled Sunday to take Pinder's roster spot, also can play third. Orf, 30, played in 15 games with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018, and has seen time at second, third and shortstop, as well as in the outfield.
