How A's are approaching final days before trade deadline

The MLB trade deadline is just a few days away, and with the Athletics vying for a fourth straight playoff appearance, that means they’ll more than likely make a move before July 30.

For manager Bob Melvin, he usually plays it cool during this time of the season.

“You know what, I typically look at it as the team we have, we’re going forward with so I don’t get expectations too high,” Melvin said on Saturday.

At the moment, Melvin is pleased with the current team he has, but is open to whatever moves general manager David Forst and the A's front office make.

“I do like our team, so if we make a move, then great, if not, I’m not disappointed. I’ve always kind of looked at it that way,” Melvin added.

Forst has said several times in recent weeks that the A’s, just like every other team on the playoff bubble, are looking for a power bat and some bullpen help.

The Tampa Bay Rays pounced quickly on the market by acquiring veteran designated hitter Nelson Cruz and trading 41-year-old starting pitcher Rich Hill to the New York Mets for right-handed starter Tommy Hunter.

While the A’s were rumored to be one of the teams interested in Cruz, Melvin said it was a good acquisition for Tampa Bay. Melvin admitted Cruz has been a bit of a thorn in the side of the A’s, so he was thankful he doesn’t have to face the Rays during the rest of the 2021 regular season.

“I do know that we’re looking, as are a lot of teams,” Melvin said. “It has to be the right fit.”

Melvin did offer up somewhat of a timeline, however.

“It feels like there might be more moves later on, towards the end," Melvin said. "I think a lot of teams are looking at the same things. There are a lot of teams that are in it so, in our case, if we do something it might be toward the latter part of, right before the deadline, is my guess."
