Home plate ump hit twice, forced to leave A's-Angels game

There was a brief delay during the top of the seventh inning in the series finale between the Athletics and Los Angeles Angels on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum after home plate umpire Marty Foster was forced to leave the game.

Foster was hit in the mask in back-to-back innings and after the second time, the decision was made to remove him from the game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Foster took a foul ball off the mask and immediately fell to the ground. A's trainer Nick Paparesta quickly ran out to check on Foster, who remained in the game.

Then in the top of the seventh inning, a pitch by A's reliever Zach Jackson bounced in the dirt and again caught Foster in the mask, staggering him.

Second base umpire Scott Barry ran into the clubhouse, put on the gear and assumed the role of home plate umpire for the remainder of the game.

Foster, 58, has been an MLB umpire since 1999.
