A's reunite with Lowrie, agree to terms on minor league deal

The A’s have agreed to terms with infielder Jed Lowrie on a minor league contract and an invite to spring training, the team announced Wednesday.

Lowrie is no stranger to the A's. He played five seasons in Oakland, earning All-Star honors in 2018 when he hit .267/.353/.448 with 23 home runs and 159 hits. He also was part of a few postseason runs with the A’s.

He signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the New York Mets in 2019, but only played in nine games after being riddled with knee injuries.

It appears Lowrie had been on the A’s radar for a while, so this reunion isn’t much of a surprise. There was a possibility for Lowrie to return in 2019, but the Mets wouldn’t go through with a trade because they would have had to eat a big chunk of the $10 million Lowrie was owed that season.

Lowrie could factor into the A's second base situation this season, giving them another option to platoon with Tony Kemp.

If healthy, Lowrie also could provide some benefit offensively with his ability to switch hit making him a versatile infield option.

The A’s roster now sits at 39 after the agreement with Lowrie.
