But the Tigers fought back.
Detroit’s first baseman Miguel Cabrera tied it up in the bottom of the sixth with his 601st career double, which tied Barry Bonds for 17th place in MLB history.
But a two-run Brownie blast from Seth Brown in the eighth put the A’s back on top and ultimately sealed the win in Detroit on Thursday.
“I was just trying to get my top hand a little more involved,” Brown said after the win. “Obviously, in this big of a ballpark you got to keep it low, keep it on the ground so [I was] just trying to get my top hand a little more involved in those swings.”
A.J. Puk (1-0) pitched two scoreless relief innings for his first win since September of 2019. Meanwhile, Dany Jimenez pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many opportunities.
