The word “uncharacteristic” was thrown around in the Athletics’ postgame Zoom following their 8-6 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night at Globe Life Field.
A few fielding errors and pitching mistakes cost the A's dearly in the loss, but the offense looked strong overall.
A’s first baseman Matt Olson hit his 29th home run of the season and Mitch Moreland went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

“We’re seeing some better at-bats across the board,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “It’s what we do when we’re playing well, our best at-bats come later in the game as it happened again today. We just gave up a few too many runs after the starter came out which is uncharacteristic.”
A’s starter Cole Irvin struggled against left-handed bats in the Rangers lineup.
“They seem to have success against me and I need to start figuring out what that is,” Irvin said.
In five innings, Irvin struck out only two, walking one while allowing three earned runs.

Reliable veteran reliever Sergio Romo gave up the go-ahead three-run homer to rookie Yohel Pozo. Melvin said he couldn’t tell you when the last time Romo did that was.
“There are going to be days like that,” Melvin said of Romo.
A’s outfielder Seth Brown, who went 2-for-4, did say there’s something to build off of.

“All throughout the lineup right now everybody’s swinging pretty well,” Brown said. “Looking forward to these next couple months here and seeing where it takes this year.”
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for the A’s. They’ll continue their three-game series on Saturday with James Kaprielian getting the start against Rangers’ Jordan Lyles.
