The A’s acquired minor league outfielder Junior Perez from the Padres on Thursday, completing the June 30 trade that sent infielder Jorge Mateo to San Diego.
The 19-year-old Perez batted .268/.349/.512 with 56 hits and 39 RBI in 2019 with the Padres Arizona Rookie League affiliate and looks to have had most of his work take place in right field during that time.

SIGN UP HERE “A recently-turned 18-year-old, Perez was one of the youngest qualified hitters in the AZL. He has a well-proportioned frame and (perhaps-reductively) looks like a baseball player. He had a 53.6% FB% and elevates with intent. During instructs, Perez flashed 55 raw in BP. In games, he had some ugly swing and miss on spin. He is an aggressive defender in the right field, showing a tendency to take charge on balls hit to right/center. He profiles as a fourth outfielder.”

It appears Perez strikes out a lot, but that's not surprising at such a young age. There's still a chance he’ll learn to develop more patience at the plate, and he did make the Arizona League All-Star team after his 2019 campaign.
