MILWAUKEE -- A day after pitching through the flu, Madison Bumgarner got back to his normal routine. The clubhouse seems to be hitting the tail end of this, but manager Bruce Bochy said catcher Buster Posey is still feeling a bit ill.
That's not the reason Posey might sit Wednesday, though. Because the Giants have a day game in Milwaukee, a flight two-thirds of the way across the country, and then a day game in San Francisco, Bochy is leaning toward pairing Trevor Brown with Jeff Samardzija.
Posey was pulled in the eighth inning of a blowout on Monday afternoon, and Bochy said he'll be more aggressive about resting Posey and other veterans this year. Denard Span and Brandon Crawford also got extra rest in the opener.

"It's always a little risky with the catcher, but it's the right thing to do," Bochy said.
The Giants have a pretty well-worn routine with Posey by now. He has started 111, 119, 109 and 103 games at catcher over the past four seasons, with last year's total being cut by late-season injuries that moved Posey to first and put Brown behind the plate in his first big league month.
The Giants have traditionally paired their backup -- usually Hector Sanchez -- with one starter, and it seems likely Brown gets that treatment after the opening stretch of 23 games in 24 days is over. The clubhouse consensus seems to be that Brown will regularly catch Jake Peavy at some point, but for now he'll fill in when Bochy wants to rest Posey's legs. That could start Wednesday, and it's possible an infielder will be off, too.

"I might mix in a Tomlinson or Adrianza here to keep them going early," Bochy said. "A game like yesterday's helps out (with that)."
Adrianza, by the way, is the emergency catcher.
"I think he'd be fine for an inning or two," Bochy said.
That's one plan the Giants would rather keep off the field.
--- Bochy watched some baseball last night -- the Dodgers also looked good on Day 1 -- but turned over to the basketball game at the right time. The staff was giving North Carolina native Bobby Evans a hard time today.

--- It seems a good bet that either Brandon Belt or Crawford puts down a bunt against the shift over the next two days. Players certainly noticed how aggressively they were shifted on Monday. Belt squared on the first pitch he saw, and some Giants thought he might have had a shot at a bunt double given how far off the line the Brewers infielders were.
--- Johnny Cueto makes his debut tonight. Cueto actually has four Opening Day starts, and per the Giants, every pitcher in the rotation has gone first at one time or another. Jake Peavy also has four Opening Day starts, Jeff Samardzija has two, and Matt Cain has one.
--- Also from the pregame PR notes: The Giants are the only team in the National League without a player on the disabled list (the White Sox and Twins are also healthy). The Dodgers begin the year with an MLB-high 10 players on the DL.
