Notes: Duffy back in the third spot for slumping Giants

SAN FRANCISCO -- Here's the funny thing about this Giants skid: They're still fourth in the National League in runs scored.

No, the sky is not falling, but it's been a rough week nonetheless, so manger Bruce Bochy decided to change it up. Matt Duffy, one of the few Giants not going through a slump at the moment, is back in the No. 3 spot. To break up the right-handers, Brandon Belt slides ahead of Hunter Pence.

"Let's try what worked (last year), because right now it's not working," Bochy said. "We're just going back to what worked for us for a while last year. Matt is swinging the bat well. I think it's fair to say that guys are trying to find their swings."

Bochy said he liked the lineup when Duffy hit third last year, but a change was made this spring because he wanted Buster Posey hitting third and then being the "cleanup hitter" when the lineup turns over and Angel Pagan acts as a second leadoff man. This changes that dynamic.

"I thought about that, but I don't want to mess with Angel to be honest because he's swinging the bat well," Bochy said. "I'll leave it as it is. I guess Buster becomes the five-hole hitter the second time around."

Bochy said he's thinking of one other change. He talked to Denard Span and told him that Pagan may go back to the leadoff spot against left-handed hitters. Span is just 4-for-26 against lefties.

"He gives us an experienced left-handed bat coming off the bench," Bochy said. "And Mac, he just wasn't getting playing time. That's too tough a job to pinch-hit, especially against closers and setup guys."

Williamson will go back to playing every day. Gillaspie is here as a backup at third and first, and a "pro at-bat" off the bench, Bochy said.
