DENVER — Trevor Brown worked well with Jeff Samardzija on Wednesday night, giving Bochy a little more leeway down the line.

“It’s always nice to have a catcher get a start with one of your guys he probably wasn’t going to catch a lot and they have success,” Bochy said. “Jeff loved throwing to him, just like he does with Buster, and that makes it a little easier if Buster needs a day. I’ll say this: (the starters) all are comfortable throwing to (Brown).”

Buster Posey is back in the lineup Thursday for the series finale.

Samardzija praised Brown’s intelligence and work ethic, as other veterans have in the past. Before the home run outburst over the past week, Brown was known as a defense-first catcher. It’s likely that at some point Bochy will pair him with one starter, either Jake Peavy or Matt Cain, but the coaching staff knows Brown has a comfort level with any of the five. He made a point of catching every starting pitcher several times during spring training.

--- Brandon Belt's homer had a launch angle of 41 degrees, a season-high in MLB. It was so high that Carlos Gonzalez camped under it in front of the warning track and appeared to have a shot, and then the ball landed a few rows into the seats.

--- Madison Bumgarner’s second-to-last BP round on Wednesday: Four swings, four homers. He appears ready for a rematch with Clayton Kershaw on Friday, although you figure Kershaw won’t dare throw him another fastball. In his last round, Bumgarner hit a ball onto the concourse in left field and then walked out of the cage.

“He’s making our hitters look bad,” a team employee joked.
