BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO — Jake Peavy was frustrated by his first three starts of the season, vowing to get it right. Saturday was a huge step in the right direction.

Peavy pitched seven strong innings in a 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins, earning his first win of the season. A night after Jeff Samardzija drove in three runs, Peavy broke the game open with a two-run single off Jose Fernandez.

Bruce Bochy likes to say you have to get to a good pitcher early, and the Giants hung two on Fernandez in the first. Joe Panik, Matt Duffy and Buster Posey hit consecutive singles and Brandon Belt drove a sacrifice fly.

Belt led off the fourth with a walk and took third on Hunter Pence’s double. The Marlins intentionally walked Gregor Blanco to load the bases for Peavy, who entered the night with just four RBI as a Giant. A night after Samardzija drove in a run following an intentional walk, Peavy lined a fastball to left, scoring a pair.

Peavy never faced serious trouble on the mound, giving up a run in the third and another in the sixth. He got Dee Gordon out four times and struck out Giancarlo Stanton twice, including in the sixth when the Marlins got their leadoff hitter on ahead of the heart of their lineup.

Starting pitching report: Peavy threw just 90 pitches in his seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits. He had not thrown more than five innings in any of his previous starts this season and had not allowed fewer than four runs.

Bullpen report: Hunter Strickland against Stanton wasn’t quite the battle you would expect. Strickland threw him two good curveballs and a 96 mph heater to get ahead, then painted the edge of the strike zone with a 97 mph fastball.

At the plate: Bochy joked before the game that Blanco will know he’s in the lineup when the opposing ace comes up on the schedule. Blanco fared well against Zack Greinke on Wednesday and he had two triples and walk in four plate appearances Saturday.

In the field: Peavy saved himself a run and got out of the third inning with one of his best plays as a Giant. With a runner on third and two down, Christian Yelich topped a slow roller between the mound and third-base line. Peavy slid to grab it and threw the ball to first as he was popping up. The perfect throw nabbed Yelich by a couple of feet.

Attendance: The Giants announced a crowd of 41,886 human beings who recorded the Triple G fight and told their friends not to spoil it.

Up next: Matt Cain will go for the sweep. He faces left-hander Adam Conley (0-1, 4.61 ERA).
