Instant Replay: Cain can't control Orioles in Giants' loss

BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO — The Orioles comfortably lead the majors in home runs this season, and on a foggy Friday night, they looked right at home in massive AT&T Park. It would be hard to find a park right now that the Giants’ offense could look comfortable in.

The sputtering lineup had just five hits in a 5-2 loss to the Orioles. Over their last 33 innings, the Giants have scored just four runs.

This is a group that has left the starting pitchers with absolutely zero wiggle room, and Matt Cain needed some help Friday. Cain was coming off two straight scoreless starts against the Nationals and early on he looked like the same guy. He worked around a Crawford error in the first, getting Mark Trumbo to hit into an inning-ending double play. But the exit velocity would take a spike in the second. The Orioles had two doubles and two singles to score a pair, and they kept spraying hard-hit balls around the yard in the third.

With a runner on, Mark Trumbo blasted a 441-foot homer to the back of the bleachers in left field. Cain stranded two in scoring position in the fourth, throwing a high fastball past Trumbo. But Chris Davis opened the fifth with an opposite-field shot, ending Cain’s day.

The Giants scored a run in the third but had a string of 13 consecutive outs before back-to-back singles in the ninth.

Starting pitching report: Cain tied a career-high by allowing 11 hits. This was the first time he did it in fewer than five innings. Cain has 16 career double-digit hits starts and three of them have come this season.
