Gutierrez's Instant Replay: Giants 3, Diamondbacks 1

BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO -- Buster Posey's sacrifice fly out to right field in the eighth inning scored Ryan Theriot and the Giants mustered together enough opportunistic hits to pull out a 3-1 victory over Arizona before another sellout crowd at AT&T Park on Tuesday. The second-place Giants, who pulled within 5 12 games of the Los Angeles Dodgers, trailed early and threatened to be routed early as the Diamondbacks twice loaded the bases, to no avail. After dropping their first four meetings of the season to the Diamondbacks, the Giants have now won four straight against the defending National League West division champions.Starting pitching reportRyan Vogelsong danced with the devil in the pale moonlight -- twice loading the bases -- and lived to tell the tale -- and twice leaving them loaded. Granted, the right-hander did not figure in the decision but he gave the Giants a chance in going seven innings and allowing one run and six hits. He was far from on-point, walking three, one intentionally, and hitting a batter and uncorking a wild pitch, but he was let's say, wildly effective in his season high-tying 117 pitches, 71 for strikes.Bullpen reportClay Hensley replaced Vogelsong in the eighth and pitched a perfect inning before closer Santiago Casilla closed it out with a scoreless ninth for his 14th save. Conspicuous by his absence the past two days, though, was usual setup man Sergio Romo.At the plateMelky Cabrera singled three times to give him 50 hits in the month of May, passing Willie Mays (49) for most hits by a Giants player in May since the team moved to San Francisco in 1958. Mays accomplished the feat that first year. Up next: Randy Winn's 51 hits, accomplished in September of 2005. Cabrera also scored the Giants' first run, coming home from first on Buster Posey's sixth-inning double. In the fieldThe Giants still lead the major leagues with 51 errors but played error-free ball. A 3-2 fielders choice with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth seemed to swing momentum in the Giants' favor.AttendanceThe Giants announced a paid crowd of 41,371 for the Giants' 108th consecutive home sellout.Up nextIn a rematch of the season opener in Arizona, right-hander Tim Lincecum (2-5, 4.61 ERA) faces Arizona righty Ian Kennedy (3-5, 4.65) in the CSN Bay Area-televised game Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. While Lincecum is 7-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 19 career appearances against the Diamondbacks, he gave up five runs and six hits in 5 13 innings and took the loss on April 6.
