Outfielder Nate Schierholtz, a Giants fan favorite who never broke into the starting lineup on a regular basis, has been traded to the Phillies as part of the deal for Hunter Pence.
The deal was announced shortly after 11 a.m. and also included Giants minor league catcher Tommy Joseph, and minor league right-handed pitcher Seth Rosin.
Schierholtz was primarily used as a defensive replacement in the Giants' 2010 World Series campaign. He spent some time in the starting lineup in 2011 but this year was the odd-man out in a crowded outfield that featured offseason acquisitions Angel Pagan, Melky Cabrera and Gregor Blanco.

He recently showcased his talent to the Phillies, hitting a pair of home runs in a July 22 game in Philadelphia.
Schierholtz was a second-round selection by San Francisco in the second round of the 2003 MLB Draft. He was first called up to the Giants in 2007.
He grew up in the East Bay, starring at San Ramon Valley High School.
