Giants takeaways: What you might have missed in 5-3 loss to Padres

BOX SCORE

The good vibes from that Dodgers series didn't make it through the first night back home. Jeff Samardzija got roughed up in his first start of the year and the lineup fell to 0-3 against right-handed starters as the Giants lost 5-3 to the Padres.

The Giants put the leadoff runner on in the eighth, but Pablo Sandoval struck out and Wilmer Flores hit into a double play. In the bottom of the ninth, old friend Drew Pomeranz came on for the Padres and struck out the side.

It was a quiet home opener for the Giants. Here are three things to know about it ...

Shark tank

The Giants held Samardzija out of the Dodgers series, but the Padres, who have a lineup filled with right-handers, didn't provide a soft landing spot.

Fernando Tatis inside-outed a low slider into the arcade in right field -- a seemingly impossible swing for a righty -- for a three-run homer. Perhaps the ball is juiced. Perhaps the ballpark has changed with the archways closed up. Or Perhaps the young shortstop is just a freak who is going to make Giants' lives miserable for the next decade.

Wil Myers has done that in recent years, and he became the first player to homer into the new bullpens. The homer was the ninth for Myers at Oracle Park in the last four seasons, the most among visiting players and just two behind Kevin Pillar for the most among any player.

Samardzija gave up five earned in four innings and struck out just one. His fastball hit 92 mph once and averaged 90.

Slow start

Joe McCarthy was 0-for-8 with three strikeouts in Los Angeles, but he was back in there Tuesday against right-hander Kyle Davies. The rookie outfielder struck out in his first two at-bats though and it was notable that Donovan Solano pinch-hit for McCarthy in the seventh even though there was a hard-throwing righty on the mound.

McCarthy wasn't expected to be on the Opening Day roster, but he made the cut when Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria got hurt. With Belt likely due back Thursday, the audition could be over soon.

Bounce-back outing

Dany Jimenez pitched the ninth inning in what was a sneaky-big moment for him and the front office. The Giants were disappointed with his command last Thursday and don't have much time to evaluate the Rule 5 pick, with rosters getting cut to 28 players in a little over a week.

Jimenez pitched a 1-2-3 inning, although it wasn't smooth sailing. He threw a lot more strikes but still missed his spots, and Austin Hedges took him to the warning track for the final out. Still, this was a step in the right direction. Expect the Giants to get him out there a couple more times over the next week as they continue the evaluation process.
