PHILADELPHIA -- The Giants talked confidently the last two days of keeping this run going, but they'll have to do so without the guy who might have started it. The lineup took off when Alex Dickerson arrived in late June, but the outfielder went on the injured list on Thursday morning after an MRI showed a right oblique strain.
Dickerson has been in and out of the lineup in recent weeks because of the issue. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the strain is mild, but Dickerson needs five to 10 days to heal. This has been his story -- he has tremendous talent, but injuries have always derailed his career.
"We hated to do it," Bochy said. "We'd love to have his bat out there, but it's the right thing to do right now."

Dickerson is hitting .386 for the Giants with six homers in 88 at-bats. He has been a game-changer for the lineup, but for the time being the outfield will be Mike Yastrzemski, Kevin Pillar, Austin Slater and Tyler Austin.
Bochy said the Giants did not want to add another position player with three games at Coors Field this weekend. Lefty Sam Selman, who has been on the taxi squad, was called up from Triple-A Sacramento.

Selman was going to get a look at some point. The 28-year-old has a 1.35 ERA in Triple-A this season with 65 strikeouts in 40 innings. He was the next man up if the Giants traded Will Smith or Tony Watson, but now will join as bullpen depth.

To clear a 40-man spot for Selman, the Giants designated right-hander Dan Winkler for assignment. He was picked up from the Braves on Wednesday in the Mark Melancon trade.
