Giants notes: Vogelsong effectively wild

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ryan Vogelsong did not figure in the final decision, but his effective wildness (or was it wild effectiveness?) kept the Giants afloat long enough to enable them to rally for the 3-1 defeat of Arizona.Twice Vogelsong loaded the bases -- in the fourth and sixth innings -- and twice he escaped unscathed."You can get out of one (bases-loaded situation)," he said, "but I was fortunate to get out of two. Pretty lucky. Pretty fortunate."

Still, Vogelsong has not allowed more than three earned runs in 10 consecutive home starts, dating to Aug. 25, 2011, and lowered his season ERA to 1.51. It was the sixth time he pitched at least seven innings in nine starts this season.Angel Pagan was 2-for-4 and has a 23-game home hitting streak, tying Matt Williams for the second-longest such streak since 1918. Don Mueller hit in 24 straight home games over the 1954 and 1955 seasons. All seven of the Giants' hits came from the 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup, Melky Cabrera (three hits), Buster Posey (two) and Pagan (two).Conspicuous by his absence in the first two games of the Arizona series was setup man Sergio Romo. In his place, Clay Hensley has thrown two perfect eighth innings."Just days off," Romo said as he left the clubhouse.Bochy, on the job Santiago Casilla has done as the Giants closer: "He has saved us. It's hard when you lose your closer, one of the elite closers in the game (in Brian Wilson). He's kind of the unsung hero of the team. He's done his job."And then some. Casilla has successfully converted 14 of his 15 save opportunities after a 1-2-3 ninth inning Tuesday night.
