Sanchez, 28, was just 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA this season before missing the final month with a left ankle sprain. Over his career with Giants that began in 2006, Sanchez compiled a 38-46 record.
Sanchez threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres on July 10, 2009, striking out 11 hitters en-route to the Giants' first no-no in 33 years.
Cabrera hit a career-best .305 with 44 doubles, 18 homers and 87 RBIs in his first season with the Royals.
The Giants also traded minor-league left-hander Ryan Verdugo in the deal. He was 8-6 with a 4.35 ERA for Double-A Richmond this year.SLIDESHOW: Jonathan Sanchez's no hitterThe Associated Press contributed to this report.
