Michael Nolan, a former A's minor league pitcher who was the victim of a drive-by shooting last month in New York, died Friday.

The Yonkers native was drafted by Oakland in the 18th round of the 2014 draft. He did not appear in any games while in the A's system and retired last year, though he remained on the team's restricted list.

According to media reports, Nolan, 23, was shot in the head and torso Sept. 18 while standing in the parking lot of a Burger King in Yonkers, and he had remained in a medically-induced coma ever since. There were conflicting reports Thursday about Nolan's condition, but according to the Journal News, he was pronounced brain dead Thursday. Family members did not confirm his death until Friday afternoon.

The A's released the following statement from general manager David Forst: "On behalf of the entire A's organization, I send my deepest condolences to Donna and Jimmy Nolan. Michael will always be a member of the A's family, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends for their tragic loss."

Yonkers police have not yet made an arrest in the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.

Nolan, a 6-foot-7 lefty, was drafted out of Oklahoma City University and had undergone Tommy John surgery before being selected by the A's.

The A's sent Nolan's Rookie League jersey that he wore last year to his family, along with a home white jersey with his name and No. 47, which he wore in the Rookie League, on the back.
